第六十七章

天下皆谓我道大，似不肖。夫唯大，故似不肖。若肖，久矣其细也夫。我有三宝，持而保之。一曰慈，二曰俭，三曰不敢为天下先。慈，故能勇；俭，故能广；不敢为天下先，故能成器长。今舍慈且勇，舍俭且广，舍后且先，死矣！夫慈，以战则胜，以守则固，天将救之，以慈卫之。

All under heaven say that my Tao is great and resembles nothing else. It is precisely because it is great that it resembles nothing. If it resembled anything, it would long ago have become small. I have three treasures that I hold and protect: the first is compassion; the second is frugality; the third is not daring to be first in the world. With compassion, one can be courageous; with frugality, one can be generous; not daring to be first, one can become a leader. Now if one is courageous without compassion, generous without frugality, first without being last — this is death! For compassion leads to victory in battle and strength in defense. Heaven will save and protect those who have compassion.

天下人都说我的道很大，似乎不像什么具体的东西。正因为大，所以不像什么具体的东西。如果像什么具体的东西，那它早就变得渺小了。我有三件宝物，持有并珍藏着：第一叫慈爱，第二叫节俭，第三叫不敢走在天下人前面。慈爱所以能勇敢，节俭所以能大方，不敢走在天下人前面所以能成为万物的领袖。如今舍弃慈爱而追求勇敢，舍弃节俭而追求大方，舍弃退后而追求争先，那就死路一条！慈爱，用来战斗就能胜利，用来防守就能坚固。天要拯救谁，就用慈爱来护佑他。
