第六十六章

江海所以能为百谷王者，以其善下之，故能为百谷王。是以欲上民，必以言下之；欲先民，必以身后之。是以圣人处上而民不重，处前而民不害，是以天下乐推而不厌。以其不争，故天下莫能与之争。

The reason the sea can be king of all streams is that it lies below them. Therefore it can be king of all streams. Thus, if the sage wishes to be above the people, he must speak humbly to them. If he wishes to be ahead of the people, he must place himself behind them. Therefore the sage stands above but the people do not feel burdened; stands in front but the people are not harmed. Therefore the whole world is happy to support him and never tires of him. Because he does not compete, no one in the world can compete with him.
