第三十二章

道常无名，朴虽小，天下莫能臣也。侯王若能守之，万物将自宾。天地相合以降甘露，民莫之令而自均。始制有名，名亦既有，夫亦将知止。知止可以不殆。譬道之在天下，犹川谷之于江海。

The Tao is eternally nameless. Though its simplicity seems small, the world cannot make it submit. If kings and lords could hold to it, all things would naturally pay homage. Heaven and earth would unite to send sweet dew, and the people, without being commanded, would naturally be at peace. When institutions begin, names appear. Once names appear, one should know where to stop. Knowing when to stop prevents danger. The Tao in the world is like rivers and streams flowing into the sea.

道永远是无名而质朴的。虽然微小却没有什么能使它臣服。侯王若能持守它，万物将会自然归顺。天地之气相合就会降下甘露，人民不需要命令就会自然均匀。当制度开始建立，各种名分就产生了。名分既已有了，就要知道适可而止。知道适可而止就不会有危险。道存在于天下，就像溪流汇入江海一样自然。
