Chapter 31

夫佳兵者,不祥之器。物或恶之,故有道者不处。君子居则贵左,用兵则贵右。兵者,不祥之器,非君子之器。不得已而用之,恬淡为上,胜而不美。而美之者,是乐杀人。夫乐杀人者,则不可以得志于天下矣。吉事尚左,凶事尚右。偏将军居左,上将军居右,言以丧礼处之。杀人之众,以哀悲泣之,战胜,以丧礼处之。

Fine weapons are instruments of misfortune. All creatures detest them, so one who follows the Tao does not keep them. The gentleman at home honors the left; in war he honors the right. Weapons are instruments of misfortune, not the instruments of a gentleman. When forced to use them, it is best to do so with calm restraint; even in victory there is no beauty. One who finds beauty in it delights in slaughter. One who delights in slaughter cannot achieve his purpose in the world. In happy occasions, the left is honored; in sad occasions, the right. The lieutenant general stands on the left; the commanding general stands on the right — that is, they are arranged as in funeral rites. When many people are killed, weep for them with grief and sorrow. When victorious in battle, observe the rites of mourning.
