Chapter 30
以道佐人主者,不以兵强天下,其事好还。师之所处,荆棘生焉。大军之后,必有凶年。善有果而已,不敢以取强。果而勿矜,果而勿伐,果而勿骄,果而不得已,果而勿强。物壮则老,是谓不道,不道早已。
One who uses the Tao to advise a ruler does not use force of arms to conquer the world, for these things tend to rebound. Where armies have camped, thorns and brambles grow. After a great war, there are always years of famine. A good general achieves his purpose and stops; he does not dare to use force to dominate. Achieve purpose without arrogance, without boasting, without pride; achieve purpose as a last resort, without force. Things that are overgrown soon decay — this is called departing from the Tao. What departs from the Tao comes to an early end.
