第二十九章

将欲取天下而为之，吾见其不得已。天下神器，不可为也。为者败之，执者失之。故物或行或随，或歔或吹，或强或羸，或挫或隳。是以圣人去甚，去奢，去泰。

Those who wish to take the world and act upon it, I see that they cannot succeed. The world is a sacred vessel and cannot be acted upon. Those who act on it fail; those who grasp it lose it. Among all things, some lead and some follow; some breathe gently and some breathe hard; some are strong and some are weak; some build up and some tear down. Therefore the sage avoids extremes, avoids excess, avoids extravagance.

想要治理天下而强加干预，我看他是达不到目的的。天下是神圣的器物，不可以强行干预。强行干预的就会破坏它，强行把持的就会失去它。因为万物，有的在前有的在后，有的缓吹有的急吹，有的强壮有的赢弱，有的能建设有的会毁坏。所以圣人要去除那些极端的、奢侈的、过度的东西。
