Chapter 14

视之不见名曰夷,听之不闻名曰希,搏之不得名曰微。此三者不可致诘,故混而为一。其上不皦,其下不昧。绳绳不可名,复归于无物,是谓无状之状,无物之象。是谓惚恍。迎之不见其首,随之不见其后。执古之道,以御今之有,能知古始,是谓道纪。

Look at it — it cannot be seen; it is called formless. Listen to it — it cannot be heard; it is called soundless. Grasp at it — it cannot be caught; it is called intangible. These three cannot be further inquired into, so they merge into one. Its rising is not bright; its setting is not dark. Ceaselessly, ceaselessly, it cannot be named, and returns to nothingness. This is the form of the formless, the image of the imageless — this is called the elusive. Meet it and you do not see its face; follow it and you do not see its back. Hold to the ancient Tao to master present existence. To know the ancient beginning is the essence of the Tao.

看它看不见叫做'夷',听它听不到叫做'希',摸它摸不着叫做'微'。这三方面无法追究到底,所以它们混合为一体。它上面不明亮,下面不暗昧。连绵不断而无法命名,最终回归于没有任何具体事物的状态。这就是没有形状的形状、没有实物的形象,叫做恍惚。迎着它看不见它的前头,跟着它看不见它的后面。把握自古以来就存在的道,来驾驭当今的万事万物,能认识事物的本源,这就叫做道的纲领。
