Chapter 51

The Tao gives birth to them; virtue nourishes them; matter shapes them; circumstances complete them. Therefore all things venerate the Tao and honor virtue. The veneration of the Tao and the honoring of virtue are not commanded but always natural. So the Tao gives birth to them, nourishes them, grows them, rears them, shelters them, nurtures them, supports them, and protects them. It gives birth without possessing, acts without relying, leads without dominating — this is called Mysterious Virtue.
