Chapter 25

There was something formed from chaos that existed before heaven and earth. Silent and void, it stands alone and does not change, moves in cycles and does not tire — it can be regarded as the mother of all under heaven. I do not know its name, so I call it 'Tao.' Forced to give it a name, I call it 'Great.' Great means flowing; flowing means far-reaching; far-reaching means returning. Therefore the Tao is great, heaven is great, earth is great, and the king is also great. In the universe there are four greats, and the king is one of them. Humanity follows the earth, earth follows heaven, heaven follows the Tao, and the Tao follows its own nature.
