Chapter 24
企者不立,跨者不行,自见者不明,自是者不彰,自伐者无功,自矜者不长。其在道也,曰余食赘行。物或恶之,故有道者不处。
He who stands on tiptoe does not stand firm. He who strides cannot walk far. He who shows himself does not shine. He who justifies himself is not distinguished. He who boasts has no merit. He who glorifies himself will not endure. In terms of the Tao, these are called excess food and unnecessary action. All creatures detest them. Therefore the one who has the Tao does not abide in them.

踮起脚跟的人站不稳,迈大步的人走不远。自我表现的人反而不明白,自以为是的人反而不彰显,自我夸耀的人反而没功劳,自高自大的人反而不长久。这些行为从道的角度来看,就像是多余的食物和赘余的行为。连万物都厌恶它们,所以有道的人不会这样做。
