第十九章
Chapter 19
绝圣弃智，民利百倍；绝仁弃义，民复孝慈；绝巧弃利，盗贼无有。此三者，以为文不足，故令有所属，见素抱朴，少私寡欲。
Abandon sagacity and discard wisdom, and the people will benefit a hundredfold. Abandon benevolence and discard righteousness, and the people will return to filial piety and love. Abandon skill and discard profit, and thieves and robbers will disappear. These three things are mere ornaments and are not enough. Therefore let the people have something to hold on to: show simplicity, embrace plainness, reduce selfishness, diminish desires.

抛弃聪明智巧，人民可以得到百倍的好处；抛弃仁义的说教，人民可以恢复孝慈的本性；抛弃投机取巧和追逐利益，盗贼就不会出现。这三条作为准则还不够，所以要让人们有所遵循：保持纯朴的本性，减少私心和欲望。
