第十六章

致虚极，守静笃，万物并作，吾以观复。夫物芸芸，各复归其根。归根曰静，是谓复命。复命曰常，知常曰明，不知常，妄作，凶。知常容，容乃公，公乃王，王乃天，天乃道，道乃久，没身不殆。

Attain utmost emptiness; hold firm to stillness. All things arise together, and I watch their return. All things flourish, and each returns to its root. Returning to the root is called stillness; stillness is called returning to destiny. Returning to destiny is called the eternal; knowing the eternal is called enlightenment. Not knowing the eternal leads to reckless acts and misfortune. Knowing the eternal brings tolerance; tolerance brings impartiality; impartiality brings kingliness; kingliness brings heavenliness; heavenliness brings the Tao; the Tao brings endurance. To the end of life, one is free from danger.

使心灵达到极度虚空的境界，坚守清静。万物一起生长发展，我从中观察它们循环往复的规律。万物纷纷芸芸，最终各自回归到它们的根本。回归根本叫做静，这就叫做回复本性。回复本性叫做常道，认识常道叫做明智。不认识常道，就会轻举妄动，招来灾祸。认识常道就能包容一切，包容一切就能公正无私，公正无私就能统领万方，统领万方就能合乎天道，合乎天道就能合乎大道，合乎大道就能长久，终身不会有危险。
