第六十二章

Chapter 62

道者万物之奥,善人之宝,不善人之所保。美言可以市,尊行可以加人。人之不善,何弃之有!故立天子,置三公,虽有拱璧以先驷马,不如坐进此道。古之所以贵此道者何?不曰以求得,有罪以免邪?故为天下贵。

The Tao is the treasure house of all things — the treasure of the good person and the refuge of the not-good. Beautiful words can win honor in the market; noble deeds can earn respect from others. As for those who are not good, why should they be abandoned? Therefore, when the Son of Heaven is enthroned and the three ministers installed, though one may present jade discs ahead of a team of four horses, it is better to sit still and offer this Tao. Why did the ancients prize this Tao? Did they not say: 'Through it, those who seek shall find; through it, those who have sinned shall be forgiven'? Therefore it is the most precious thing under heaven.
