Chapter 59
治人事天莫若啬。夫唯啬,是谓早服。早服谓之重积德,重积德则无不克,无不克则莫知其极,莫知其极,可以有国。有国之母,可以长久。是谓深根固柢,长生久视之道。
In governing people and serving heaven, nothing is better than moderation. Only through moderation can one return early to the Tao. Returning early means deeply accumulating virtue. When virtue is deeply accumulated, nothing cannot be overcome. When nothing cannot be overcome, no one knows your limits. When no one knows your limits, you can govern a state. When you hold the mother of the state, you can last long. This is called having deep roots and a firm foundation — the way of long life and lasting vision.

治理人民、侍奉天道,没有比节俭更好的了。只有节俭,才能及早顺应道。及早顺应道就是重重积累德。重重积累德就没有什么不能克服的,没有什么不能克服就无人能知道他的极限,无人能知道他的极限就可以拥有国家。掌握了国家的根本之道,就可以长久。这就叫做根深蒂固、长生久视的道理。
