Chapter 42
The Tao gives birth to the One; the One gives birth to Two; Two gives birth to Three; Three gives birth to all things. All things carry yin and embrace yang, and through the blending of qi they achieve harmony. What people detest — being orphaned, desolate, and unworthy — yet kings and lords use these as titles. Thus, things may be diminished yet increased, or increased yet diminished. What others teach, I also teach: 'The violent and forceful do not die natural deaths.' I shall make this the basis of my teaching.
